The Republic of Zimbabwe

This landlocked country in Southern Africa is situated between the Zambezi and Limpopo Rivers. Zambia lies to the North-West, with the Zambezi river and Victoria Falls forming the border. Mozambique lies to the North-East, with its border formed by the Eastern Highlands. Botswana lies to the South-West and South Africa to the South (its border formed by the Limpopo River).

Zimbabwe was formerly known as Southern Rhodesia, a British self-governing colony created on land held by the British South Africa Company of which Cecil John Rhodes was a director.  Rhodes prevailed upon BSAC officials in London, resulting in the granting of full BSAC political, administrative, economic and military authority over all land North of the Limpopo River.  The first pioneer column left Kimberley for Rhodesia in May 1890, and established Fort Victoria in August 1890. A party of pioneers, including the renowned hunter, Courtney Selous, continued further northwards, and in September 1890 raised the British flag at what was then Salisbury (now Harare).

From 1953 – 1963, Southern Rhodesia formed part of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. After many lengthy political upheavals, the independence of Zimbabwe was internationally recognised in 1980. President Robert Mugabe is the present Head of State and Morgan Tsvangirai is the Prime Minister.

Since 2000, tourism has steadily declined, with several airlines pulling out of the country. However, this Southern African land has a wealth of unique tourist attractions, with no less than five UNESCO World Heritage sites, not least of all the Victoria Falls.
